Videos and QR Codes in the Library
Youtube:
The NHS Library Channel:
Video that is most helpful for students:
The librarian shows students how to use the EBSCOHost database, both at home and school.
Video that kids would like most:
This video shows the school mascot touring the library and doing various activities such as browsing the online catalog for tiger books. Too cute!
The Unquiet Library Channel:
Video that is most helpful for students:
This video had one of the highest amount of views on this channel. Prezis are one of the most common presentation tools, so I think this is very helpful to students.
Video that kids would like most:
The librarian brings the library to the students at lunch! They were so amazed.
Pikesville HS Library Channel:
Video that is most helpful for students:
The librarian features ways that the library addresses student needs. I could tell that the library is a welcoming place for students.
Video that kids would like most:
This video was so fun to watch! The Avid seniors dance to music on the tables and the librarian playfully yells, "This is a library. We need to get quiet in here!" This shows that she has fun with her students.
BBMS Media Channel:
First of all, this librarian is so creative and fun! I loved exploring his videos. They were very entertaining.
Video that is most helpful for students:
In this seven minute clip, the librarian gives students all the information they need to know about the school library: book checkout policy, reasons to visit the library, a tour of library, overview of the flexible schedule. This video helps students feel prepared on how to use the library media center.
Video that kids would like most:
The Drake music video for this song went viral a couple of years ago. The librarian's Overdue Drake Parody had over 2,000 views! Very funny.
Animoto:
This was my first time sampling Animoto, a video creation site. What a fun tool! I created a Book Trailer over a book that one of my 4th grade students recommended to me: Way of the Warrior Kid: Marc's Mission by Jocko Willink, a retired Navy SEAL officer.
Marc’s life has changed since last summer, when his for-real,
super-cool Navy SEAL Uncle Jake came to visit. He’s eating healthy,
practicing jiu-jitsu, and working hard in school.
Marc’s had a great year…until the very last day of school, when he gets into trouble because of Nathan James. Nathan is mean and annoying, and Marc has to spend every day with Nathan at summer camp. Nathan calls Marc “Plate Face,” and he’ll never leave him alone. Marc is sick of it.
Even worse, Marc has no way to get to summer camp except for walking. He wants a new bike, called "the Bentley," but his parents don’t think he needs it, even though the bike he owns is totally falling apart.
There’s only one person who can help Marc turn his bummer summer around – Uncle Jake.
With Uncle Jake back in town, Marc realizes that being a Warrior Kid isn’t just about being strong on the outside – it’s also about being strong on the inside. Can Marc learn to control his temper, get himself the bike he wants, and get Nathan off his back?
As I created my book trailer, I discovered many strengths and weaknesses of Animoto.
Strengths:
I used QR Code Generator on my laptop to create the code from Animoto. I then used QR Code Reader on my Android phone to scan the code and verify that it worked. It was very easy to download and use.
Ways to use QR codes in the library:
I read about ways to use QR codes in the library on Eduscapes.com.

As I created my book trailer, I discovered many strengths and weaknesses of Animoto.
Strengths:
- User friendly and easy to navigate (I was able to create my own video without any "how-tos" before hand.
- Ability to upload your own files into the video
- Ability to add music into the video. Animoto has a variety of music: pop, electronic, hip hop, etc.
- Limited in how much text is allowed per video slide (less than 100 characters which is sometimes not enough!)
- Does not sync with Google Technology
- Free image library is very limited and does not have a search function, which makes searching take longer than it should.
I used QR Code Generator on my laptop to create the code from Animoto. I then used QR Code Reader on my Android phone to scan the code and verify that it worked. It was very easy to download and use.
I read about ways to use QR codes in the library on Eduscapes.com.
Some ideas are:
- advertise particular books for a book fair by displaying QR codes around the school and library
- A QR code scavenger hunt when teaching library expectations and giving a tour of the library
- students create book reviews/trailers and display in a "Book recommendation" corner.

Hello Anita,
ReplyDeleteWow! viewing your post is just amazing. I like the way you sum up your information "to the point". I like everything about your post. Great Work!
Anita,
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed watching all of the educational videos you posted. It gives us many resources as to how to use videos in the library program in order to promote literacy and makes students feel welcomed and valued. In addition, your Animoto QR Code Book Trailer was on point. I do agree with you about Animotos' weaknesses outweighing its strengths. The only thing I wished it offered was sinking with Google technology. All in all, very informative post.
Best,
JHValdez
I liked your suggestions on how to use QR codes for the library, such as advertising for a new book or the book fair. I have used QR codes in the past but Animoto was new to me too. Finding a good free image source was a little difficult but I agree Animoto was very easy to use and I throughly enjoyed it. I think we chose the same YouTube Videos!
